The picture on the left shows the solar active region before the flare. The dark elongated regions are the so called "filaments" or "prominences". They are dense and cold regions sustained at high altitude by the magnetic field. On the right, the flare is visible as large bright regions. The double ribbons, in fact, are at the foot points of magnetic loops located astride one of the filaments.
